Kangaroo Words – Exercise 2

Kangaroo words are words that have a smaller word inside them, just like a mother kangaroo has a baby kangaroo (called a joey) in her pouch.

Examples:

  • The word seven contains two words: eve(s-eve-n) and even(s-even).
  • The word another contains (a-nother), an (an-other), other (an-other), the (ano-the-r), not (a-not-her), he (anot-he-r), and her (anot-her).

How many hidden words can you find in the words given below?

  1. Carefully
  2. Factory
  3. Handball
  4. Belong
  5. Newspaper
  6. Chicken

  1. Carefully – car, care, are, careful, full, fully
  2. Factory – fact, act, actor
  3. Handball – hand, and, an, a, ball, all
  4. Belong – be, long
  5. Newspaper – new, news, paper, ape, aper, per (An aper is a person who apes, who imitates, a mimic)
  6. Chicken –chic, chick, hen, ken

‘Aper’ is not a commonly used word.

Please look up ‘ken’ and ‘chic’ in the dictionary. What do they mean? How is ‘chic’ pronounced?
