Lesson 104 – Starting to Write Poetry – 2

As you fill your notebook with things that are important and fascinating to you, you’re that much closer to writing some poems.

The writing process usually involves the following steps:

  1. Brainstorming, when you write down ideas, thoughts, feelings, and images. You can also do a quick sketch of whatever has caught your attention.
  2. Drafting, when you write down the poem for the first time. You write the main points but not all the details.
  3. Editing, when you go over your poem and look and listen for ways to make it better.
  4. Revising, when you make improvements to your poem.

Acrostic Poems

For your first poem, try writing an acrostic poem about a subject that you know very well: yourself. If you’ve done a lot of writing in your notebook, you probably have learnt quite a bit about yourself. This poem will give you a chance to use some of that information. Below are two examples of acrostic poems.

Joya

J – joyful
O – optimistic
– young
– ambitious

Poem 1: Write your name vertically on the left of the page. Write an acrostic poem to introduce yourself.

Samir

– super cool
A – always fun
– my best friend
I – independent
R – reliable

Poem 2: Write your best friend’s name vertically on the left of the page. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your best friend. Now write an acrostic poem that describes him or her.

Another example of an acrostic poem:

Candy

– crunchy, chewy
A – awesome
– nice and sweet
– delightful and delicious
– Yummy treat

Now write a few more acrostic poems. Write one about someone you admire, your favourite sport, a hobby, friendship, ice cream, winter, your hometown, your favourite festival.

If your favourite festival is HOLI write HOLI vertically on the left of the page. The first line will begin with the letter ‘h’ the second with the letter ‘o,’ etc.

Have fun!
