3. 10-Minute One-on-One English Conversation Class for a Level 2 Beginner
Lesson Topic: Talking About Your School
Objective:
- By the end of this lesson, the Mentee will be able to talk about their school, subjects, and favourite activities in simple English.
- Grammar Focus: Articles – Definite article – The, Indefinite Articles – A, An. These can be indicated during the conversation practice. The mentee should be told when to use the definite article and when to use the indefinite articles. They should also be told when not to use the definite article – before unaccountable (I like music.), plurals (Books are expensive.), general ideas (I go to school every day.), and proper nouns (I live in Delhi.) and common nouns whose identity is not known. (I love cricket.).
1. Warm-up (2 minutes)
Mentor: “Hello! How are you today?” (Encourage the Mentee to respond with ‘I’m good’, ‘I’m fine’, or ‘I’m okay’.)
Mentor: “Today, we will talk about your school. Let’s begin!”
2. Model Conversation (3 minutes)
This is a simulated model conversation and the answers may not reflect reality. The mentor and mentee can alter the questions and answers to reflect reality.
Mentor: “Listen to this short conversation. I will read both parts first, then we will practice together.”
- Mentor Reads:
Mentor reads both parts of the conversation below.
Mentor: Which school do you go to?
Mentee: I go to XYZ Public School. (Indicate that there should not be a definite article, the, before the name of the school as it is a proper noun.)
- Practice Round:
The Mentor takes one role, and the Mentee takes the other.
Swap roles and repeat the conversation.

Mentee: I am in Grade 8.

3. Mentee Practice (3 minutes)
Activity: Each Mentee creates their own answers using this template:
- “I study at ___ (school name).”
- “I am in ___ (grade/class).”
- “My favourite subject is ___ because ___.”
- “My favourite sport is ___ because ___.”
The Mentor gives feedback and helps with pronunciation.
4. Reinforcement & Wrap-up (2 minutes)
- Quick Review:
- “Which school do you go to?”
- “What is your favourite subject?”
- “What is your favourite sport and why?”
- Homework:
- Encourage them to talk about this topic and record themselves. Ask them to play it during the next session.
