7. 10-Minute One-on-One English Conversation Class for a Level 4 Beginner
Lesson Format: Event Based Discussion & Reflection
Topic: Expressing Opinions
Objective:
- By the end of the lesson, the Mentee will be able to express simple opinions on an event using basic English.
- Grammar Focus: Action Verbs. These can be indicated during the conversation practice. They are marked out in bold letters below for easier identification.
1. Warm-up (2 minutes) – Quick Thought Game
Activity: “Agree or Disagree?”
The Mentor makes a statement, and the Mentee quickly responds with “I agree” or “I disagree” and gives a short reason.
- “Reading books is more interesting than watching“
- “Online learning is easier than classroom learning.”
- “Students should be allowed to carry calculators to classes and exams.”
(Encourage simple opinion expressions: “I think…”, “In my opinion…”, “Because…”)
2. Event Discussion (3 minutes)
Discussion Questions:
- “Which movie/TV serial did you see last?
- Did you enjoy it or not?
- Why did you / didn’t you enjoy it?
- What could have made it better?
- Who was the best actor in the movie/TV serial? Why do you say that?”
(Encourage full-sentence answers: “I think… because…”, “In my view…”)
3. Guided Practice (3 minutes) – Opinion Building Exercise
Mentor: “Now, let’s practice expressing opinions on different topics.”
Activity: Sentence Completion
- “I think technology is important because ______.”
- “In my opinion, school life is ______.”
- “I believe that a good friend should ______.”
(The Mentee fills in the blanks with their own ideas. The Mentor helps correct grammar and pronunciation.)
4. Wrap-up & Reflection (2 minutes) – Personal Experience Sharing
Final Task:
- “Tell me about a time when you were very happy. Why were you very happy? What did you do?”
- “If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be and why?”
- Which sportsperson would you like to meet in person and why?
- Which place in India would you like to visit and why?
- Homework:
The Mentee speaks a few lines on “A person I admire and why” or “How technology can be used to make our daily life better”. The Mentee records themselves and plays the recording back in the next class.
