10.       10-Minute One-on-One English Conversation Class for a Level 5 Beginner

 Lesson Topic: Shopping in English

 Lesson Format: Guided Discussion + Interactive Role-Play + Vocabulary Game

 Objective:

  • Teach the Mentee how to shop in English in an Indian context.
  • Use real-life situations such as shopping for grocery, stationery, books, clothes, etc.
  • Encourage confident and clear communication.
  • Grammar Focus: Adjectives – size, descriptive, comparative. These can be indicated during the conversation practice. They are marked out in bold letters below for easier identification.

1.           Warm-Up (2 Minutes) – Quick Discussion

Mentor: “Do you like to go to the market?”

Mentee: (Responds)

Mentor: (If Mentee response is yes) “What do you go to buy?”

(If Mentee is response is no) “Why don’t you like going to the market?”

Mentor: “Where do you usually buy clothes in your city?”
Mentee: (Responds)

Mentor: “Great! Today, we will practice conversations about shopping, in English.”

2.           Vocabulary Introduction (2 Minutes) – Common Words for Shopping

Types of Clothing: Shirt, T-shirt, jeans, dress, jacket, shoes, sandals, scarf, trousers, slippers, socks

Sizes & Fit: Small, medium, large, loose, comfortable

Shopping Questions:

  • “Do you have this in a larger size?”
  • “How much does this cost?”
  • “Can I try this on?”

3.           Role-Play (4 Minutes) – Shopping Conversation Practice

Scenario 1: Buying a T-Shirt at a Store

Mentor (as shop assistant): “Hello! How can I help you today?”
Mentee: “Hi! I’m looking for a T-shirt.”

Mentor: “What colour would you like?”

Mentee:Blue, please.”

Mentor: “We have this one in blue. Would you like to try it?”
Mentee: “Yes, where is the trial room?”

Mentor: “It’s over there. Let me know if you need a different size.”

(Switch roles and repeat.)

4.           Game Time (2 Minutes) – Shopping Challenge!

  • The Mentor describes a clothing item (“I am wearing something blue, made of cotton, and it has buttons.”)
  • The Mentee guesses the item (e.g., “Is it a shirt?”)
  • Reverse roles and play again!

5.           Reinforcement & Homework

  • Practice in class:
  • “How will you purchase a notebook from a stationery shop, speaking in English?”
  • “How will you purchase cake or some namkeen from a food shop?”

 

  • Homework:

Ask the mentee to record, in English, an imaginary situation of buying a textbook from a book shop. Ask them to play it back in the next class.
