Module 2: Level 1

Lesson Topic: Talking About Family

 Objective:

  • By the end of this lesson, the Mentees will be able to talk about their family in simple English.
  • Grammar Focus: Possessive Pronouns – your, my, our. These can be indicated during the conversation practice. They are marked out in bold letters below for easier identification.

1.           Warm-up (2 minutes)

Mentor: “Hello again! How are you today?” (Encourage the Mentee to respond with ‘I’m good’, ‘I’m fine’, or ‘I’m okay’.)

Mentor: “Today, we will practice talking about your family. Let’s begin!”

2.           Model Conversation (3 minutes)

This is a simulated model conversation and the answers may not reflect reality. The mentor and mentee can alter the questions and answers to reflect reality.

Mentor: “Listen to this short conversation. I will read both parts first, then we will practice together.”

  • Mentor Reads:

Mentor reads both parts of the conversation below.

Mentor: How many people are there in your family?

Mentee: There are four people in my family.

  • Practice Round:

The Mentor takes one role, and the Mentee takes the other.

Swap roles and repeat the conversation.

Mentor: Who are they?

Mentee: My father, my mother, my sister, and me.

Mentor: What does your sister do?

Mentee: She studies in Class 4.

Mentee: They live in our village.

3.           Mentee Practice (3 minutes)

Activity: Each Mentee creates their own answers using this template:

  • “There are ___ people in my
  • “I have ___ (brothers/sisters).”
  • My brothers/sisters __________.” (what they do)
  • “What about your family?” (Encourage them to ask questions, too!)

The Mentor gives feedback and helps with pronunciation.

 4.           Reinforcement & Wrap-up (2 minutes)

  • Quick Review:
  • “How many people are there in your family?”
  • “What do your brothers/sisters do?”
  • “Can you ask me a question about my family?”

 

  • Homework:

Encourage them to practice speaking about their families and record themselves. Ask them to play the recording during the next session.
